Volleyball Club Nationals - Kansas City - 2009
The Volleyball Club National Championship was held in Kansas City this year. The University of Miami sent one Women's team to compete in Division II. They went undefeated the first day of competition, taking the first seed in their pool and advancing to the championship flight. They defeated Western Michigan University, Washington University, and UNC-Wilmington. They went 1 and 1 the second day, taking second place in their pool and advancing to the gold bracket. They defeated the University of Washington and lost to Oregon. On Saturday, they lost their first match of the single elimination tournament to Indiana University. Although they were knocked out, they ultimately placed in the top 16 of Division II. Additionally, the team's middle blocker, Barbora Davidova, won an Honorable Mention Award for her outstanding play throughout the tournament.
The University of Miami also sent one Men's team to compete in Division I AA. They were placed in an extremely tough pool for their first day of competition. Their first match was against the #1 seeded team for the entire division, the University of Rhode Island, which they lost. They also lost to UC-Santa Barbara and beat the University of Albany. They finished the day 1 and 2 and advanced to the challenge round. Unfortunately, they lost their challenge match to Ohio University the following day and entered the consolation bracket. In pool play, they went 1 and 1, defeating Texas State University and losing to the University of Massachusetts-Amhurst. The men took second place in their pool which placed them into the bronze division. On Saturday in single elimination play they went undefeated the entire day, 4 and 0, winning the bronze bracket championship. They defeated Central Michigan University, University of Texas-Arlington, San Francisco State, and West Virginia University. Their overall match record for the tournament was 6 and 4.
Hoosier-Illini Classic - 2009
The University of Miami sent the A squad to this massive tournament held at the University of Indiana. The Hoosier-Illini Classic is the biggest men's tournament of the year other than the National Championship. The University of Illinois and Indiana University rotate the hosting duties each year. This year, 29 of the best teams in the country traveled to Indiana University to compete in this two-day tournament. In the past, the winner of the Hoosier-Illini Classic is usually the National Champion or the runner-up.
This was UM's first time attending this tournament that consists mostly of D1 A club teams. Due to the student body population, the University of Miami Men's team usually competes in D1 AA. Therefore, the majority of the teams at this tournament presented more a challenge to our A squad. Nevertheless, we were a competitor in each match.
Teams competed within their pools during the first day of competition. In UM's pool were outstanding teams including the University of Illinois (ranked one of the best teams in the country the past few years), the University of Missouri (the eventual winner of this tournament), and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Despite the talent on these other teams, our squad scored at least 17 points in each match. Unfortunately, we did not win any matches during pool play.
At the end of the day, teams had to compete in challenge matches in order to determine seeding for playoffs. Our challenge game was against the Air Force Academy. We defeated Air Force in three games which gave us a higher seed in the Silver bracket.
On Sunday, we unfortunately lost in the first round of playoffs to Penn State. Penn State went on to win the Silver Bracket.
